So we’ve already established that it’s important to have a presence online. Equally as important to have a presence on social media. But just having an account isn’t going to be enough. To use social media to attract potential clients you have to create valuable and consistent content.
What does this mean?
Let’s start with consistency. How often should you post on social media? There’s 2 answers for that question.
1. The more you post the better because it gives you more opportunity to connect with your audience.
2. Don’t just post to post. Commit to however much you can commit to. If that’s 3 days a week to start with, great. But figure out what you can commit to and do that.
Moving on to value. Think about why you follow the accounts that you do. Either you know them and care about what they’re posting because you care about them. Or you follow them because they have content you relate to. Maybe you admire it, are inspired by it, or it’s a product you really like. Think about this when you’re creating content.
So how do I do this?
First, you need to know who your ideal client is. I just posted about this last week so take a look here. This step is very, very important. If you don’t know who you’re talking to, how will you know what to say. Do not skip this step and do not think you can relate the same message to everyone.
After you’ve nailed this down, it’s time to brainstorm. Here’s some things you should think about:
1. Are there any hashtag days relevant to your niche? See October Marketing Ideas for an example of this. Or think #nationaltacoday, #OOTDDay.
2. Are there any hashtags relevant to my brand? Think #margaritamonday, #tiletuesday, #transformationthursday. This can help you come up with a plan for monthly content.
3. What events or specials does your brand or company have coming up?
The above list is a great chance to make sure you don’t miss anything. If you own a taco truck, but you miss #nationaltacoday, you’ve missed a huge opportunity. Stay relevant.

Google that schnit!
No really, go to google and type in “content ideas for [your business]” and learn from the best of the best. Someone out there has come up with some amazing content ideas already and there’s no reason why you can’t use it for inspiration. That’s what is so awesome about the internet! So use your free resources to your advantage and get to google-ing.
It’s time to start filling in your calendar. Fill in all the hashtag dates and events to have to remember. If you’ve got something special coming up, make sure you put in some content to promote it. But your content should be something valuable to your clients. So get creative! Here’s some examples:
#TipTuesday: write blog posts (I may follow this one) about your subject. This is great value added. Or maybe create a video with a tip about something.
#TransformationThursday: Tell a story about what of your client’s transformations. Or tell your story!
#MeatlessMonday: Give a recipe for a delicious meatless meal.
The point is to get creative and give something to your followers that they will want to share. Yes, they may share that funny dog meme, but how does that relate to your hair salon? Tips on how to keep your color lasting longer? That’s something they could use, share, bookmark and a perfect way to keep you in their head as an industry leader.
